RescueTime Alternatives in 2026: Four Options Compared

Updated October 3, 2026 · by the Panda's Recap team

RescueTime is the original automatic tracker, and it's still a good one. If you want automatic tracking with a different take, Rize and Timing are the closest options. If you'd rather track by task, Toggl is the classic choice, and Panda's Recap turns that record into your performance review and résumé.

What RescueTime does well

RescueTime runs in the background and records which apps and websites you use, so you never have to remember to start a timer. Its weekly reports show where your attention went, and its Focus sessions block distracting sites when you need to concentrate. It runs on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android, and it's been doing this for over 15 years.

Plans start at $9 a month for Solo Focus, or $84 a year. Solo+ at $15 a month adds Timesheets, which log time by project, client and task. There are team plans too, and a free Lite version that keeps two weeks of history.

On privacy, RescueTime says it doesn't record keystrokes, screenshots or page content.

Two ways to track

Automatic trackers answer "where did my day go?" They're great for spotting habits, like how much of the afternoon went to email.

Task trackers answer "what did I get done?" You say what you're working on and a timer runs, so the record is in your words. It takes a few clicks, and it gives you something you can point to at review time.

Panda's Recap

Best for: someone who wants a record of their work they can use for their career.

A performance review Panda's Recap wrote from a year of tracked work

Panda's Recap is a task board with a timer on every card. You drag a card to In Progress when you start and to Done when you finish, so your record is a list of what you did, with the hours behind each item. Google Calendar meetings come in on their own.

At review time, that list becomes a draft performance review, for free. Pro writes the finished review, builds a résumé from the same record, answers questions about your year, and makes invoices if you bill by the hour.

Pros: your record turns into a review and a résumé. $4.99 a month flat, with a free version that doesn't expire. New accounts get 14 days of Pro with no card.

Cons: you start and stop the timer yourself. No focus mode or site blocking. No desktop app.

Rize

Best for: someone who wants automatic tracking with AI sorting it into categories.

Rize tracks automatically on Mac and Windows and groups your time for you. Basic is $12.99 a month, or $9.99 billed yearly, with a 7-day trial.

Pros: automatic, modern, does the sorting for you.

Cons: Linux isn't supported yet.

Timing

Best for: a Mac user who wants automatic tracking.

Timing is built for the Mac and tracks automatically. Plans start at $10 a month, with a 30-day trial and no card needed.

Pros: the longest free trial here.

Cons: Mac only.

Toggl

Best for: someone moving to task-based tracking.

Toggl is the best-known task timer. The free plan covers up to 3 users, and paid plans start at $9 a user a month billed yearly.

Pros: easy, free for small use, apps everywhere.

Cons: the record stays a timesheet.

How to choose

If you want to understand your habits and protect your focus, stay automatic. RescueTime, Rize and Timing all do that well.

If you want to be able to say what you did, by task and by client, track by task. Toggl gives you clean timesheets, and Panda's Recap turns your year into your review and your résumé.
